Two Giants, One Sky
December 2024. TikTok Shop and Tokopedia — two of Indonesia's largest e-commerce platforms that have just joined the GoTo ecosystem — want to celebrate 12.12 with something like never before. The choice fell on the drone show at Blok M Square, one of Jakarta's iconic shopping centers.
The brief was challenging: in one show, both brands had to appear equally — the TikTok logo and the Tokopedia logo each had to appear clear, familiar and proportional. No one should look more dominant. Plus there is the '12.12' narrative and campaign message.
Technical Challenge: Two Logos in One Show
Rendering two different logos that are both publicly known with high precision is a design challenge in itself. The TikTok logo with its distinctive notes, and the Tokopedia logo with its familiar green characters — both have unique details that must appear accurate from a height of 60 meters.
Our team created a transition animation: from the opening sphere, morph to the TikTok logo, hold 15 seconds, smooth transition to the Tokopedia logo, hold 15 seconds, then the text '12.12' in a large formation. Total 150 drones, 10 minute show.
Urban Venues: EMI and Architectural Challenges
Blok M Square is surrounded by tall buildings. This affects two things: GPS signal quality (tall buildings can reflect GPS signals and cause errors) and turbulent winds (down-draft from buildings can affect hover stability).
We conducted site surveys twice — day and night — to measure the quality of GPS at the launch zone and map wind patterns. The result: the launch zone was moved 40 meters from the original plan to an area with a cleaner signal.
Resonance and Viral
The most iconic moment: when the TikTok logo formed perfectly in the sky of Blok M, hundreds of people in the area immediately pointed their cameras upwards. Organic videos from viewers spread across TikTok and Instagram in a matter of hours — both ironic and perfect that a drone show on TikTok went viral on TikTok.
The TikTok and Tokopedia content teams also received exclusive footage which they used for future campaign materials. One investment, multiple contents — because drone shows are events that produce social media content organically.
