Two Very Different Worlds
Outdoor and indoor drone shows are two almost technically different products, even though the visual principles are the same. The choice between the two greatly influences costs, logistics, and the end result that the audience experiences.
Outdoors: Scale, Freedom, Unlimited Skies
Outdoor drone shows are the most common and most visually powerful format. Thousands of cubic meters of open space allow for a much larger number of drones, freer heights and viewing angles that more people can enjoy.
Almost all iDRONE shows to date have been outdoor โ from Canggu beaches to Jakarta rooftops to Prambanan courtyards. Main advantages: there is no limit on the number of drones, the show can be seen from a radius of hundreds of meters (even non-invited guests can watch from afar), and the dark sky is the perfect backdrop.
Outdoor challenges: weather. Strong winds, rain or fog can disrupt or even cancel the show. iDRONE always has a weather contingency plan in every contract: if weather conditions are dangerous, the show can be postponed up to 2 hours or rescheduled.
Indoor: Precision, Privacy and Closed Drama
Indoor drone shows โ inside a convention hall, hotel hall, or arena โ offer something that outdoor ones can't: total control. There are no weather variables, the altitude can be lower so details are sharper and the viewer can feel the drone 'almost reachable'.
Drones used indoors are special units with propeller guards, are lighter, and use an indoor-based GPS system (motion capture or ultrasonic positioning) because GPS signals do not enter indoors.
Indoor shows are suitable for: 5 star hotel gala dinners, corporate conferences, premium product launches, or events that require total privacy. The capacity of indoor drones is usually smaller (50โ200 units) due to limited room volume.
Licensing: Outdoor is More Complex
Outdoor shows require NOTAMs and coordination with ATC. Indoor shows in buildings do not require NOTAMs because they are in a closed space โ this is one of the advantages of indoors from an administrative perspective.
However, indoor requires permission from building management and sometimes requires coordination with the fire alarm system (drone + indoor = smoke sensor sensitivity that needs to be recalibrated or temporarily turned off).
Budget: Indoor is more premium per drone
Because indoor drones are more expensive specialized units, the cost per indoor drone is higher. But because there are fewer drones, the total budget can be similar or even lower than a large outdoor show.
For an indoor show of 100 drones in a premium hotel ballroom, estimated prices can start from IDR 250-400 million. For outdoor shows, the equivalent of 100 drones, the price is in a similar range but you get the 'sky as a backdrop' which no amount of money can buy.
Recommendation
Choose outdoor if: you want a large scale, the show can be seen by many people, the venue has an open area, and you can accept the risk of weather with a contingency plan. Choose indoor if: you need privacy, the venue is a closed room, you want a show that is more immersive and 'close', or the event takes place during the day.
